Benefit Concert for Integration Projects in Leipzig

Together with the Gewandhaus Orchestra and Herbert Blomstedt

  • 60.000 Euros for the projects “Integration through Education” and “Interaction Leipzig e.V.”

Anne-Sophie Mutter is not only a singular artist personality, she is also constantly active in questions of education policy. Thus, last year at Leipzig’s Moritzbastei, the violinist played a benefit concert in aid of the project “Integration durch Bildung” (“Integration through Education”) of the Leipzig Refugee Council. To Anne-Sophie Mutter, it is a socio-political necessity that refugees “are given a chance at the best possible integration within their new homeland” and a matter of course that “ they need all our support and empathy to reach this goal”.

Therefore, Anne-Sophie Mutter suggested that the revenue generated by the Gewandhaus Orchestra’s Grand Concert under the baton of Herbert Blomstedt on March 18, 2017 should be donated to “Integration through Education e.V.” and “Interaction Leipzig e.V.”. The donated sum of 60,000 Euros was divided and each project received half. The artists did not take any fees; the Gewandhaus Orchestra was not playing as part of its regular services. “Please join our efforts by helping with a donation,” the violinist encourages further supporters.

In 2004 the Refugee Committee Leipzig e.V., a registered charitable organisation, initiated the programme “Integration through Education”, aiming to make up for educational deficits that refugee children of school age have suffered through no fault of their own. The classes, which are offered free of charge to the students, prepare them for attending regular schools and complement regular schooling.  Students of regular schools and German-as-a-second-language classes receive regular supplementary lessons and homework assistance. These offers are also continued, as necessary, as complementary measures for attendees of professional and vocational schools, technical universities and universities. Additional measures to overcome individual education obstacles are implemented as needed by the team of the Refugee Committee Leipzig e.V.  One major goal of the association’s work is equal opportunities for unaccompanied refugees who are still minors. Since 2013 this project has had its own association for support called “Integration durch Bildung e.V.” (Integration through Education e.V.). This project is organised exclusively by education volunteers. Currently the subjects offered include German, math, physics, biology, chemistry, English, geography, social studies, French and history for all school forms.

Interaction Leipzig e.V. offers regular activities (including a chorus and a theatre project). The chorus meets once a week and has 20 to 30 members, with and without refugee biographies, aged 20 to 65. One cooperation partner is the Leipzig Academy of Music and Theatre. During the past year, several concerts were organised. The theatre group staged three production last year, at the Lofft, the Neues Schauspiel and on the Sachsenbrücke bridge. Here too, some members have a refugee background; others do not. Interaction Leipzig considers itself a “platform and place for action, where people who are refugees or not, new and old citizens of Leipzig, can contribute, engage, interact and find new perspectives together”.  In addition to choral and theatre projects, Interaction Leipzig has initiated city tours, Arabic language courses, visits to exhibitions and its own art shows, cooking classes and many other activities.
